Top Ten Most Dangerous Roads for Motorcyclists in Britain Revealed

As part of the UN’s Global Road Safety Week, Swinton Insurance have been hard at work analysing our own Government’s 2016 motorcycling accident statistics and have just revealed Britain’s top ten most dangerous biking roads.

Before I reveal all, please note the statistics suggest that if you’re a man aged 25 with a bike under 125cc and are thinking of riding during daylight hours in a 30mph restriction on an A-road in dry conditions on a Wednesday, then you should probably just stay at home. You are a liability.

For the rest of you, here’s the top ten most dangerous roads by region to be aware of:

  1. Greater London, Lambeth A23

  2. South East, Rother A259

  3. Yorkshire and Humber, Kirklees A62

  4. South West, North Somerset A370

  5. West Midlands, Birmingham A4040

  6. East Midlands, Leicester A563

  7. North West, High Peak A57

  8. Wales, Powys A483

  9. Scotland, Highland A82

  10. North East, South Tyneside A194

In the spirit of keeping as many of us alive as possible, Swinton have teamed up with road safety charity IAM Roadsmart to produce some practical bike safety advice and top tips for returning riders, all of which I approve of and you can read for free by clicking hereYou’ll also find some free guides and an interactive map that shows the most dangerous regional roads across the UK here.

Swinton and IAM have also worked with a panel of experienced motorcyclists (which I have to admit includes me) who’ve provided commentary on each of those dangerous routes. I rode the A370 in North Somerset for them while I was reviewing Suzuki’s DL1000 V-Strom and you can see my piece by clicking here.

As a native of the South West, I was interested to see that this graphic shows that compared to the national average, we have more 500cc + accidents, a greater number of women riders involved in accidents and a higher number of 25 year olds experiencing prangs. But let’s not make this into a competition, eh?

The South West as compared to the national average. Men still clearly better at having accidents than women.

Ride safe and thanks to Swinton and IAM Roadsmart for this timely bit of biking advice.
